Module Nine

Attention and Focus


Goal: Students will understand the importance of attention and focus for learning and productivity. They will identify common distractions and obstacles to maintaining focus and apply strategies to enhance attention and focus in various contexts.

  2. What strategies can help improve focus and attention?
  3. How can distractions be managed effectively?

Part One: Introduction to Focus and Attention

Objective: Students will understand the importance of focus and attention for learning and productivity.

  1. Begin with a discussion on the challenges of staying focused in a world full of distractions. Ask students to brainstorm definitions of focus and attention.
  2. Use the Module Nine Slideshow/PDF to introduce the concepts of focus and attention, define them, and discuss their role in academic success. Optional: Show a video or TED Talk on the science of focus and attention. Some favorites can be found here.
  3. Discuss the benefits of improved focus and attention, such as better comprehension, memory retention, and task completion.
  4. Engage students in an activity or game that requires focused attention, such as a concentration game or a mindfulness exercise. Examples can be found in the Module Nine Slideshow/PDF. 
  5. Assess understanding through a reflection or discussion on the experience of maintaining focus during the activity.

Part Two: Influences on Focus and Attention

Objective: Students will explore internal and external influences that impact focus and attention.

  1. Discuss common distractions that can affect focus, such as technology, environmental noise, and internal thoughts in different environments.
  2. Use the Module Nine Slideshow/PDF to explain common myths and misconceptions about attention and focus. 
  3. As a group, brainstorm strategies to minimize distractions.
  4. Have students identify personal influences that enhance or hinder their focus and attention.
  5. Have students create a distraction management plan for a specific setting (e.g., studying at home, taking tests).

Part Three: Focus Techniques

Objective: Students will learn techniques to improve focus and attention.

  1. Use the Module Nine Slideshow/PDF to introduce or review the concepts of mindfulness, intentional practice, and Pomodoro and their connection to focus and attention.
  2. Review or introduce mindfulness exercises such as deep breathing, body scans, and focused awareness of the present moment. Optional: Guide students through a mindfulness or meditation activity
  3. Use the Module Nine Slideshow/PDF to explain how mindfulness practices can enhance cognitive control, reduce stress, and improve concentration.
  4. Encourage students to apply mindfulness practices and the Pomodoro Technique throughout the day.

Part Four: Applying Focus Strategies

Objective: Students will practice strategies for improving focus and attention.

  1. Begin by reflecting on previous discussions around focus and attention techniques.
  2. Have students identify a topic or subject to focus on. 
  3. Allocate time for students to apply focus strategies while studying or completing tasks.
  4. Have students reflect on their experience through discussion or writing, noting which strategies were most effective for them.

Part Five: Personal Focus Improvement Plan

Objective: Students will create a personalized focus improvement plan and set goals and action steps for enhancing their focus and attention skills.

  1. Guide students in setting specific, measurable goals related to focus and attention.
  2. Have students develop an action plan outlining strategies, timelines, and accountability measures for achieving their goals. A template is available in the Module Nine PDF.
  3. Students can present their focus improvement plans to the class or individually, sharing insights and strategies.
